Where to Stay in London: Choosing the Right Area

London is not one hotel market. It is a set of clusters with different prices, different transport and different reasons to be there.

Pick the area from the trip, not the other way round. If the trip has one fixed point, a venue, a station or an office, start there and accept whatever the surrounding market costs. If it does not, the sensible move is to pick a cluster with strong transport and a rate you are happy with, then judge everything else from that. Across our 500 London properties with a credible observed rate, the median was around £111 per night in August 2026, and the gap between the cheapest and the dearest cluster was roughly £119.

First question: is there a fixed point?

Some trips have one. A concert at The O2, an exhibition at ExCeL, a fixture at Wembley, an early flight from London City. In those cases the area is already chosen and the only real decision is how much distance you are prepared to put between the bed and the thing you came for.

Most trips do not have one. If yours does not, the fixed point becomes the transport network instead, and the choice widens considerably.

What the clusters cost

These are median observed rates from a single month, across the properties we hold in each hub. They order the market. They do not price your dates.

Reading that table

The three cheapest clusters in our sample were Paddington (around £83), Hyde Park (around £83) and Stratford (around £91). The three dearest were London Bridge (around £202), Liverpool Street (around £182) and Waterloo (around £168). The cheap end is not uniformly further out, and the expensive end is not uniformly central, which is the point: in London, price tracks the specific cluster more closely than it tracks the distance from the middle.

Choosing between the clusters

You are here for one venue

Distance to the venue outranks everything else, including the nightly rate. On an event night the walk back is the part you will remember.

You are arriving by train

Stay close enough that luggage is not a decision. These clusters also tend to have the widest network coverage, which matters more than the address itself.

You want to be in the middle of things

You are paying for the walk home at midnight. Whether that is worth it depends on how many of your evenings actually end in the centre.

You want a neighbourhood rather than a centre

Quieter streets, more space for the money in most of these clusters, and a journey at both ends of the day.

The area decides more about a London stay than the star rating does. Choose it first, and the rest of the shortlist writes itself.

Common questions

Which part of London is cheapest to stay in?

In our August 2026 sample the lowest median observed rates were in Paddington at around £83, Hyde Park at around £83 and Stratford at around £91. Those figures come from one observation per property in a single month and they order the market rather than predicting a price for your dates.

Is it worth staying outside central London?

It depends entirely on where your day actually starts. Our outer clusters carry lower median observed rates, but every journey is paid twice, once each way. If the trip has a fixed point outside the centre, the outer cluster is not a compromise at all: it is the correct answer.
